Liar: Documents show ALRB’s Isadore Hall knew about Gerawan case before he denied it

Documents show that ALRB member Isadore Hall knew about the Gerawan farm and farmworker controversy well before the eve of his March 1 confirmation, when he claimed to know nothing about the company. The discrepancy, discovered by GV Wire, raises further questions about Hall’s truthfulness and his legal mandate to remain impartial in farmworker labor disputes. In a February 28 altercation with farm executives the night before his confirmation hearing, Hall insulted and threatened to use ALRB power to “get”…

De Leon ‘slush fund’ tied to UFW lobby triad

California’s pay-to-play political establishment showed itself again. Senator Kevin de Leon’s pushing through the nomination for UFW-backed Genevieve Shiroma to serve yet another term on the state agriculture board has a sleazy money angle. UFW lobbyist Richie Ross – to whom Shiroma paid more than $120,000 in a political deal – was a subject of the appointee’s confirmation hearing before the June 20 Senate Rules Committee hearing that de Leon shared, but the senator did not reveal that he, too,…

How to make a big scandal out of a non issue

Apart from making a lot of noise, the dying UFW can’t (or won’t) do much to help farmworkers. Its membership has crashed from more than 50,000 to less than 5,000.  The UFW can’t (or won’t) fight for better pay. The ALRB’s own chairman admits that UFW organizing in California “has completely disappeared.” He even acknowledges that most California farmworkers don’t want unions. So it’s understandable that, to detract from its failures – and make it look relevant – the UFW will…

UFW lobbyist & Shiroma campaigner Richie Ross: “Cheating is OK.”

“Because we’re teaching you about lobbying in this class, cheating is OK,” lobbyist Richie Ross told Sacramento State students. “Shortcuts.” Even though the veteran political operative was only making a quip, according to the Sacramento Bee reporter covering the class, Ross was illustrating one of his political trademarks: If you want to get your way, you can’t stoop too low. Ross’s longtime political and financial connections to ALRB board member Genevieve Shiroma have prompted calls for Shiroma to be disqualified from…

Ag attorneys may move to vacate Shiroma’s decisions on ALRB

Prominent California agricultural attorneys have told the ALRB that they may move to vacate any decision that disgraced Board member Genevieve Shiroma makes in cases concerning the United Farm Workers (UFW). “As legal practitioners before the Board, who represent cases that come before the Board, it has been recently brought to our attention that it has been nearly three months since Petitioner Silvia Lopez filed a petition to disqualify Member Shiroma from participating in any decisions relating to the above-referenced…

Lawmaker says ALRB’s Shiroma must step down for ‘unethical behavior’

ALRB member Genevieve Shiroma must be “removed” from the board because of “unethical behavior,” a California state lawmaker said today. At issue is what Assemblywoman Shannon Grove calls “Shiroma’s financial and political ties with the United Farm Workers (UFW), including $120,000 in consulting payments she made to the union’s lobbyist and former strike organizer, Richie Ross. Some of these political consulting payments were paid while Shiroma sat in judgement of a dispute between the UFW and San Joaquin farm workers.”…

ALRB’s Shiroma gave cash to Senator Steinberg, who then introduced legislation to empower ALRB

ALRB member Genevieve Shiroma gave a campaign contribution to state Senator Darrell Steinberg just before Steinberg introduced legislation to expand Shiroma’s power. The revelation is part of farmworker Silvia Lopez’s 267-page legal brief explaining why Shiroma should be disqualified to serve on the Agricultural Labor Relations Board. The Lopez brief states on page 16, “Shiroma was a political contributor to State Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg just before Sen. Steinberg introduced SB 25, which would have dramatically increased the powers…

Massive 267-page brief outlines why Shiroma should be disqualified

Genevieve Shiroma should be disqualified from serving on the ALRB because of her long-standing financial and political connections to the UFW, a farmworker says in a massive 267-page brief. Through her attorney, farmworker Silvia Lopez says she “has been denied due process and a fair hearing in this matter due to prosecutorial misconduct, and faces a further violation of her statutory and Constitutional rights due if Member Shiroma is permitted to preside over this matter.” Lopez says that she and…

Shiroma should be disqualified from serving on ALRB, farmworker says in complaint

Long-standing ALRB board member Genevieve Shiroma (@GenShiroma) is too tied in with the UFW and a prominent UFW lobbyist, and should be disqualified from serving another term, a farmworker alleges. Silvia Lopez, who has led a farmworker revolt in the San Joaquin Valley against the ALRB-UFW attempt to force a contract on the workers against their will, makes the allegation in a complaint filed earlier this week. Lopez’s attorney lays out Shiroma’s rap sheet, showing that ALRB’s credibility as a…
